What to wear to your first pole class
Share
Yay! You just signed up for your first pole dancing class — exciting 🤍
Now comes the question: what do you wear?
While you can’t go wrong with a sports bra and shorts, pole wear is a little more nuanced than your typical workout outfit. The right pieces will make your first class feel more comfortable, more secure, and way less distracting.
Sports Bra
Your goal here is security and comfort.
Pole dancing involves a lot of movement — spins, climbs, and eventually going upside down. You want a sports bra that stays in place no matter how you move.
I’ve seen far too many nip slips in class (trust me 😅), and it’s the fastest way to feel uncomfortable.
Look for:
- A snug, supportive fit
- Enough coverage to stay secure
- Straps that don’t shift during movement
Shorts
When it comes to pole, skin is essential.
You need enough skin exposure to grip the pole for foundational moves like a pole sit. Shorts with too much inseam can actually make things harder.
Your waistband matters just as much:
- It shouldn’t dig into your skin
- It should stay in place without rolling
- You shouldn’t have to adjust mid-move
The right pair will feel secure without being restrictive.
Fabric
Not all activewear fabric works for pole.
Super slippery materials (like traditional running shorts) will make it harder to grip and stay in position.
Instead, look for:
- A soft, slightly grippy feel
- Good stretch and recovery
- A balanced blend (think nylon + spandex)
This gives you the flexibility you need without sliding all over the pole.
