Why We Don't Use Harsh Elastic Bands (And Why it Matters)
Share
Top is the wisteria sports bra and bottoms are the Zinnia mid rise pole shorts. The lattice design on the sports bra actually has NO elastic. The top itself has enough support we did not feel it was necessary to add elastic in this design.
Elastic is a foundational part of activewear—it provides stretch, support, and structure. But when it’s too harsh, too tight, or poorly placed, it can work against your body instead of with it.
That’s where design makes all the difference.
The Problem With Harsh Elastic
Not all elastic is created equally. In many garments, especially in fast-produced activewear, elastic is used as a shortcut to create tightness instead of true support.
On the surface, it may feel secure. But over time—and especially during movement—it can start to reveal its downsides.
Harsh elastic can:
- Dig into the skin, leaving deep marks
- Create pressure points that become uncomfortable mid-workout
- Disrupt natural movement and flexibility
- Break the visual line of the body (especially under fitted clothing)
What’s often marketed as “compression” is sometimes just restriction.
Why This Matters More in Pole & Aerial Training
Pole and aerial disciplines demand a different relationship between your body and your clothing.
You’re not just moving—you’re gripping, inverting, extending, and flowing through positions where your clothing becomes part of the experience.
Harsh elastic can interfere in ways that aren’t always obvious at first:
- It can shift or roll when transitioning between moves
- It can create friction in the wrong places
- It can distract you from your training because you’re constantly adjusting
When you’re upside down or fully engaged in a movement, the last thing you want to think about is your waistband digging in.
Support Shouldn’t Feel Like Restriction
There’s a difference between a garment that holds you in and one that works with you.
True support comes from thoughtful construction—not just tight bands.
It should:
- Move with your body, not fight it
- Stay in place without digging
- Feel secure without cutting into your skin
When support is done right, you don’t notice it. You just feel confident, comfortable, and focused.
Our Approach at Amoui
At Amoui, we design with intention from the start.
Instead of relying on harsh elastic to create structure, we use techniques like:
- Self-faced bands that use the same fabric for a smoother feel
- Balanced compression from the fabric itself, rather than tight internal elastic
- Clean finishes that reduce digging and create a seamless look
This allows the garment to contour to your body naturally—without forcing it.
The Difference You Feel
When harsh elastic is removed from the equation, everything changes.
You may notice:
- No digging or harsh lines
- A smoother, more flattering silhouette
- Less need to adjust during training
- A more comfortable, second-skin feel
It’s subtle at first—but once you experience it, it’s hard to go back.
Why It Matters
Activewear isn’t just about how it looks—it’s about how it supports you through movement, training, and progression.
Small design choices—like the type of band used—can completely change how a piece performs.
At Amoui, we believe your clothing should enhance your training, not distract from it.
Because when you feel good in what you’re wearing, you move differently.
Final Thought
Elastic will always have a place in activewear—but how it’s used is what truly matters.
And sometimes, the best support doesn’t come from adding more tension…
but from designing with more intention.
